In our very humble opinion, this is already one of the best games in 2024. Helldivers 2 stands out as a distinctive third-person co-op shooter, immersing players in dynamically generated battlegrounds where they undertake missions for the glory of New Earth. Drawing inspiration from Paul Verhoeven's Starship Troopers, the game captures moments that resonate with the intensity of the film. Whether unleashing anti-tank munitions into bug-infested holes or experiencing the adrenaline rush of close-range air support, Helldivers 2 offers deeply satisfying gameplay.

In this interstellar conflict, players assume the role of mortal commandos armed with battle-defining firepower reminiscent of real-time strategy games. From napalm airstrikes to planet-cracking lasers, an array of devastating tools is at their disposal. However, mortality looms large, as death can swiftly descend upon players, with teamkilling becoming an integral part of the Helldivers 2 experience.

It's Not Your Average Space Fight

Diverging from the Starcraft Terrain vibe, the game expands its scope beyond insectoid adversaries. In addition to bugs, robotic foes enter the fray, each faction offering unique combat dynamics. Bugs threaten with melee attacks and acid spewing, resembling an unstoppable tide. On the other hand, robots employ heavily armored monsters and long-range laser blasts, demanding varied strategies to confront each enemy type.

The game introduces strategic elements that bring joy to players, such as unleashing massive bombs, reshaping the terrain, and creating chaotic yet satisfying moments. Despite the potential collateral damage, these stratagems add an extra layer of excitement to the gameplay.

Navigating the galaxy-spanning campaign map, players choose planets to engage based on the distinct characteristics of the occupied territories. Robots radiate a Terminator-esque red glow, surrounded by ominous red light and pollution. In contrast, bug-infested planets feature intricate tunnels and vibrant colors, setting the stage for diverse and visually captivating environments.

Creature design adheres to familiar tropes, with bugs resembling giant insects displaying variations in their bulbous sacks and glowing appendages. Meanwhile, the robotic adversaries draw inspiration from a fusion of Terminator and Warhammer 40,000 aesthetics. The game's visuals excel in motion, portraying characters authentically, especially as they disintegrate under gunfire, limbs and appendages scattering in all directions.

Bottom Line

Helldivers 2 emerges as a strong contender for the title of the year's best game. Beyond its enjoyable cooperative shooter mechanics, the real-time Galactic War simulation and potential storytelling avenues make it a compelling choice. In an era where the appeal of live-service games is questioned, Helldivers 2 has the capacity to reshape the conversation. Despite initial reservations, the game has captured my interest, and against my better judgment, I find myself actively participating in its engaging universe.
