Featured Game Review: MechWarrior 5: Clans
MechWarrior 5: Clans hit hard like a Gauss rifle shell slamming into an enemy mech’s cockpit—but it can also frustrate like fighting an Atlas while missing an arm. It’s an engaging mech combat sim that nails customization and intricacy, with a compelling campaign story (playable solo or in co-op) that tackles big ideas. Despite the bugs that stand in the way of total victory, I found myself wanting to jump back in as soon as I rolled credits on my 25-hour playthrough.
Missions will have you on the edge of your seat
The weapons in Clans feel amazing: whether managing the recoil of a Gauss rifle, timing autocannon shots, or deciding which enemy takes the brunt of your missiles, every combat decision feels impactful. Landing a well-placed shot looks, sounds, and feels spectacular, especially with a controller in hand.
Managing your mech's ammo and durability adds depth. Lose an arm, and you lose the weapons mounted on it. Some missions provide repair bays, but they’re scarce, making damage mitigation crucial. Knowing enemy mech layouts also helps you disable their strengths, adding a layer of strategy.
Clans equip you with tools like BattleGrid for complex orders or quick radial commands for real-time adjustments. You can even switch to other squad members for variety. Customization options, like overcharging for faster cooling, add risk-reward decisions that keep you constantly adapting and making crucial choices, even when solo.
You're always in control of your squad
Mech customization is at the core, offering 16 mech types across light, medium, heavy, and assault categories. Each mech is unique—whether you’re piloting the agile Viper, the heavy-hitting Mad Dog, or the iconic Timber Wolf, which can be customized with powerful weapons like Gauss rifles and missile launchers. The ability to mix and match weapons, armor, and equipment allows you to tailor your mech to your play style.
The game also encourages strategic planning with pilot skill upgrades, mech improvements, and research options. Managing your repair technicians, recruiting scientists, and specializing your pilots in certain mech types are all important aspects of squad management. You’re often faced with tough choices, like prioritizing repairs or deciding which pilot gets a critical upgrade.
Co-op play adds another layer of complexity, allowing up to five players to tackle the campaign together. However, it’s not without its challenges—bugs can affect pilot selection, and players may have to reform the squad multiple times to ensure everyone is in the right role. Despite these issues, commanding a squad of mechs with friends is one of the game’s most thrilling aspects, keeping you constantly engaged both in and out of battle.
Bottom Line
MechWarrior 5: Clans delivers an excellent campaign, driven by a thoughtful, well-told story, great mission design, and fantastic mech combat. The customization options and ethical storytelling elevate the experience, especially in co-op. Though bugs can detract from the game—particularly in multiplayer—the highs far outweigh the lows. With promised post-launch patches, many of these issues could be resolved, making an already compelling game even better. One way or another, I’ll be suiting up for the Smoke Jaguar Clan again in the future.
