Dragon's Dogma 2 feels like a spiritual successor to Sam Raimi's Evil Dead 2. With a bigger budget, Raimi unleashed his true vision for Ash's chaotic encounter with the Necronomicon. Similarly, Dragon's Dogma 2 takes the core elements that made the original a cult classic – stellar action combat and a vast, mysterious world – and injects them with a significant power-up.

Dragon's Dogma 2 throws you headfirst into the action. Brutal enemies and unpredictable encounters don't hold your hand. It's a baptism by fire that can be unforgiving. Yet, a strange charm emerges from this chaos. The game's systems, though seemingly held together with duct tape, somehow create a unique experience. Janky moments happen, but they rarely break the immersion. Instead, they contribute to a feeling of barely controlled mayhem that feels strangely intentional.

A World of Secrets

The sprawling dark fantasy world is a new canvas compared to the first game, yet it retains a similar density. Countless hidden paths and secrets wait to be discovered by the truly curious explorer. After 33 hours of playtime, conversations with fellow players revealed a shocking number of things I'd completely missed.

Exploration itself is both hazardous and thrilling. Lush forests and treacherous crags hold danger around every corner. Early on, even basic travel becomes a strategic challenge. Packs of enemies work together to cut you off, while wolves specialize in dragging you away from safety for a solo snack. Dragon's Dogma 2 takes the "nighttime danger" trope to a whole new level, transforming the moonlit hours into a brutal gauntlet of survival.

Bottom Line

Dragon's Dogma 2 is a double-edged sword. It's a love letter to the 2012 original, resurrecting its best features - a dynamic world and phenomenal physics-based combat. Exploring this world is a constant adventure, and the combat remains some of the most engaging in the genre.

Dragon's Dogma 2 also inherits some of the first game's flaws. Unreliable AI companions, frustrating climbing mechanics, occasional frame rate drops, and a camera with a mind of its own can test your patience.

Despite its quirks, Dragon's Dogma 2 offers a unique experience, unlike any other modern RPG. If you can embrace its open-ended world design, challenging combat, and a touch of jank, you'll find a true gem beneath the rough exterior
