Featured Game Review: Atomfall

Emerging from a quarantine zone bunker into the lush greens of England’s Lake District in the opening moments of Atomfall immediately sets a tone far removed from the expected Fallout-esque wasteland. Instead, the experience evokes a sense of wonder like Elden Ring, dropping players into a mysterious, unfamiliar realm where secrets unfold organically. The freeform storytelling encourages exploration, allowing every twist and turn through varied, intimidating terrain to reveal its hidden narrative, even as brutal and unpredictable combat encounters challenge every step forward.
Inspired by the real-life Windscale nuclear disaster of 1957, Atomfall unfolds five years later within a meticulously crafted quarantine zone that encircles a ruined reactor site, a neighboring village, and sprawling countryside. Within this isolated world, a tense struggle unfolds between an occupying military presence and rival factions, each forcing players to navigate a maze of conflicting moral choices. Eschewing traditional waypoint-driven navigation, the game artfully relies on subtle clues, such as drifting chimney smoke or cryptic map coordinates, to guide exploration, inviting a deep dive into a uniquely British setting rich with mystery and character.
It's refreshing to play a charmingly British survival-action game
It's refreshing to play a charmingly British survival-action game that weaves together the best of British sci-fi and folk horror into its mysterious quarantine zone. In Atomfall, nature itself becomes a character, with deadly flowers towering in the woodlands—evocative of The Day of the Triffids—and imposing wooden statues that pay homage to The Wicker Man. Subtle allusions further enrich the atmosphere, such as the elusive outline of a familiar blue phone booth that appears to shift through space and time, hinting at an otherworldly presence. The only aspect that breaks from this unmistakable British identity is the weather; a perpetually sunny environment renders the post-apocalyptic landscape unexpectedly cheerful, creating a striking contrast when venturing into the dark depths of its subterranean bunkers and caves.
Within these underworld installations, combat takes on a deliberate, measured pace that demands careful preparation and execution. Encounters with marauding outlaws, druid fanatics, feral mutants, and lumbering killbot sentries emphasize that survival in Atomfall is not about overwhelming force. Instead, the everyman protagonist—emerging from a bunker five years after the disaster—must contend with clumsy melee swings, sluggish reloading of a rusted shotgun or rifle, and the destabilizing effects of exertion on weapon handling. This design choice forces a gradual mastery of the game’s mechanics, culminating in a steep yet satisfying learning curve on the recommended Survivor difficulty.
You're less a killing machine and more a shopping cart
Atomfall’s combat feels more like pushing a rickety shopping cart than operating a finely tuned killing machine. Stealth lets you quietly take out enemies—creeping up behind them or hiding in tall grass—but it isn’t as flexible as in some other games. Even though whisky bottles are everywhere for crafting, you can’t throw one to distract foes, nor does a clear smoke bomb recipe seem available. It leaves you wondering if there’s a secret recipe tucked away somewhere, waiting to be discovered.
When things get loud, the fighting is both thrilling and a bit unpredictable. One moment, you might be ambushed in a tight space, and the next, you’re luring enemies like a clumsy parade before taking them out with a cricket bat. Patrolling foes usually just grumble and let you pass if you keep your distance, which is a relief when you’re on foot. With a simple skill tree and an on-the-go crafting system that turns scrap into useful tools, the game forces you to be cautious and plan each move carefully
Bottom line
Atomfall is a gripping survival-action adventure that mixes the best of Fallout and Elden Ring into something fresh. It offers a beautiful slice of the English countryside filled with quirky buildings, eccentric locals, and mysteries that reward every bit of exploration. With classic British sci-fi and horror touches, the game creates an unsettling yet inviting world. Despite some enemy behavior that can feel a bit off, Atomfall remains a compelling post-apocalyptic story that bends to your choices and discoveries at every turn.
