Featured Game Review: Hades 2

How do you follow up a roguelite as sharp and beloved as Hades? Supergiant Games’ answer with Hades II isn’t to reinvent the wheel, but to find the spaces where it can go bigger, lean darker, and tighten the screws without sanding off the texture. The result is a sequel that feels immediate and familiar, yet bold enough to stand on its own—an evolution built with the kind of care and flourish that have become the studio’s hallmark. From the first urgent steps of Melinoë, daughter of Hades, charged with confronting her grandfather Chronos, the game makes clear it’s not interested in simply echoing Zagreus’ journey, but in weaving a new mythology that’s every bit as compelling.
Layers of power and place
Layers define Hades II. Not just the Underworld you cut through, but the mechanics, characters, and discoveries that unfold at a steady, rewarding pace. Runs start simple, but each failure or triumph unlocks something new: a reactive line of dialogue, an upgrade from Hecate’s cauldron, a challenge from Chaos, or even a familiar that reshapes how you fight. It’s a drip-feed that excites without overwhelming, keeping discovery alive for dozens of hours.
Melinoë herself is a revelation. Where Zagreus charged like a warrior, Mel fights as a witch—relying on cunning, control, and resource management. Her arsenal is versatile: twin torches that whirl you into a frenzy, a heavy axe that rewards precision, or variations that transform weapons entirely. Her Cast trap demands forethought, making encounters more tactical than brute force. Every weapon and boon feels like exploring a new side of the myth.
The world is just as layered. Unlike the first game’s linear dive, Mel often chooses between Tartarus below or Olympus above—each with unique regions, bosses, and challenges. This smart shift doubles variety and lets you sidestep frustration when one path proves punishing. Cities with branching avenues, surface battlegrounds, and biomes teeming with danger ensure repetition rarely feels repetitive.
And then there’s the soundscape. Darren Korb’s score leans moodier, more spectral, with lofi pulses and mythic crescendos that mirror Mel’s darker journey. Ashley Barrett’s return as a vocalist lifts tracks like “Moonlight Guide Us,” while the riotous Scylla and the Sirens boss fight proves Hades II can still laugh, even as it threatens to drown you.
Bottom line
How do you even sum up something as bold and haunting as Hades II? Few studios can match Supergiant’s ability to blend sharp combat, layered storytelling, and stunning presentation into a single experience, and here they’ve raised their own bar again. The art is gorgeous, the characters unforgettable, the battles fast, varied, and tactical, and the music nothing short of spectacular. It’s the rare sequel that feels both familiar and transformative—a game that reminds you why you fell in love with games in the first place. May moonlight guide us all.
