The Precinct is what might have happened if the original Grand Theft Auto had stayed on the straight and narrow. Long before we were gunning through Liberty City as criminals with pager messages and Molotov cocktails, there was a version of GTA where you played as the police, and The Precinct feels like the alternate timeline where that vision came true. Nearly three decades later, this throwback sandbox game takes the blueprint of chaotic city crime sims and flips the perspective.

Set in a gritty, neon-soaked version of the 1980s, The Precinct skips all the modern tech and drama to focus on something simple: being a good cop, chasing bad guys, and keeping the streets clean. It feels like an old-school cop show, with fast cars, radio calls, and a city that’s always on edge. There’s no deep message here, just sirens, action, and a chance to save the day.

The game is a simple 1980s cop fantasy for classic sandbox chaos

The Precinct plays like a love letter to every over-the-top police movie and TV show from the ’80s. From the minute you hit the streets of Averno City, it’s clear realism isn’t the goal — chaos is. You’ll be booking crooks left and right, outrunning fireballs in stolen squad cars, and watching patrol vehicles pile up like it’s the grand finale of The Blues Brothers on loop. The clichés are proudly worn on their badge: rookie cop meets grumpy partner, shouty moustached chief, and more Kowalskis than you’d expect outside of a parody sketch.

Despite some clunky writing and voice acting that leans a little too hard into B-movie territory, the game’s core loop is surprisingly gripping. Each shift brings new crimes — from chasing vandals on foot to tracking suspects in a police chopper — and the variety helps keep the formula fresh. Eventually, you’ll start to feel the repetition in its procedural missions, but it’s a slow fade, not a sudden burnout. And when the high-speed chases kick in, powered by tight car handling and a slick, isometric camera, The Precinct feels more like Driver than old-school GTA.

It makes you want to play by the book

The Precinct may look like a wild cop fantasy at first glance, but underneath the tire-squealing chaos is a game that wants you to play by the book. Following proper procedure isn’t just encouraged — it’s tied directly to your XP and progression. Rough up suspects, skip ID checks, or write bogus tickets, and your daily rewards vanish. Stick to protocol, however, and you’ll earn upgrades that give you the edge in tougher shootouts or wild car chases, including riot vans and roadblocks to stop perps in their tracks.

For those who want to go full roleplay, you can even micromanage charges and personally drop suspects off at the station, though most will likely automate that part to stay on the streets. Arrests follow a familiar pattern that doesn’t evolve much by the end of the campaign, and occasional misread situations (like getting punished for defending yourself) can be frustrating. While the game mostly runs smoothly, a few bugs and awkward moments break the illusion here and there.

Bottom line

The Precinct may not be for everyone as the game's rules-heavy approach and repetition can wear thin, but there's something oddly satisfying about cruising neon-lit streets, breaking up carjackings, and playing the cop for once. The ’80s setting adds real charm, and while the insistence on proper procedure might test your patience, it also gives the game a unique identity. Fallen Tree Games finally nailed the classic GTA vibe they aimed for with American Fugitive, only this time, they made doing the right thing feel just as fun as going rogue.
