For those new to the space opera, The Final Shape is the latest expansion in Bungie’s long-running, magic-infused multiplayer FPS, Destiny 2. Playing as an immortal Guardian with a penchant for violence, the mission has always been to protect humanity from a variety of alien threats, ranging from malevolent sorcerer insects to a monotonous robot army. Along the way, players collect impressive weapons and armor, unlock powerful space magic abilities, level up, and manage a complex array of currencies, menus, and RPG systems that can be overwhelming without guidance. Over the past seven years, Destiny 2 has evolved through numerous expansions, patches, and seasonal updates, becoming a unique live-service game. It’s a mix of brilliance and frustration, offering some of the best and worst experiences in gaming.
Game offers satisfying end to the storyline
The Final Shape delivers a satisfying conclusion to Destiny 2's epic tale, wrapping up the main plot with epic battles and emotional moments. While some questions remain for future expansions, the story's end is well-executed and fulfilling.
Exploring The Pale Heart of the Traveler is a standout experience, featuring a surreal landscape where memories, desires, and fears manifest physically. This area shifts from an idyllic world to a horrific, corrupted environment, providing a fresh and immersive experience. The map's linear design feels like an epic quest, enhancing the sense of adventure.
The missions incorporate light raid mechanics and challenging combat encounters, elevating the gameplay beyond mindless shooting. New enemy faction, the Dread, adds much-needed variety with unique abilities and fresh challenges. Despite a few less inspired foes, the Dread overall injects new life into the game, making combat more dynamic and engaging.
Combat gives the game fresh breathe
The Final Shape brings a refreshing array of new weapons and abilities, enhancing the already stellar combat experience of Destiny 2. Highlights include The Call, a sidearm launching mini rockets, and Lost Signal, a grenade launcher dealing damage over time. However, the standout is the exotic Hazardous Propulsion, which unleashes a barrage of missiles from your back when using your class ability, offering an exhilarating and strategic edge in tight situations. Bungie’s knack for gunplay shines even brighter with these inventive additions, making the combat more engaging than ever.
The new Prismatic subclass further revitalizes gameplay by allowing players to combine Light and Darkness abilities from other subclasses, creating unique and powerful combinations. This subclass introduces new abilities, such as grenades that suspend enemies and electrocute the area, and super abilities that let you throw and wield giant exploding axes. The ability to mix elements previously locked behind specific classes elevates buildcrafting to new heights, offering endless customization and strategic possibilities. After countless hours of experimenting, it feels like there's still so much more to uncover with this deeply configurable toolset.

While the game's complex RPG systems, numerous currencies, and convoluted storylines remain daunting, The Final Shape provides a rewarding experience that makes it worth navigating through these challenges. Bungie has managed to create a bright and compelling light at the end of Destiny 2's long tunnel, making this expansion a must-play for both veteran Guardians and newcomers alike.
