A big welcome back to all Loot Happens subscribers. Loot Happens is a weekly newsletter that is emailed and posted on LootHappens.com.

It's important to note that for premium subscribers, game offerings and in-game content, every week is different. Sometimes it's in-game codes, Steam keys, and giveaways, but premium members will always get something special every mailing. We also occasionally get mind-blowing early access or premium games that pay for an entire year's subscription.

Each newsletter is generally structured as Premium Loot > Free Sub Giveaways > Game Feature > Game discounts.

Key Giveaway for Premium Subscribers: Doubles Hard

Credit: Red Dev Studio

Doubles Hard cranks up the chaos by taking Boulder Dash into 3D space—literally. With full movement in six directions, 45 intricate levels, and a new bomb mechanic thrown into the classic mix of diamonds, boulders, and lava, it’s a puzzle-action revival that’s both brain-bending and brutally satisfying. Think Boulder Dash, but deeper, harder, and just barely hanging together under your control. Doubles Hard is not necessarily ground breaking or unique, but it is a ton of fun.

It’s a great time to be into soulslikes, and Wuchang: Fallen Feathers is yet another strong showing in a stacked year. Following hits like Khazan, Lies of P: Overture, and Elden Ring: Nightreign, this debut from Leenzee Games delivers fast, brutal combat, stunning interconnected levels, and one of the genre’s best skill trees. Its storytelling doesn’t quite hit FromSoft heights, and the difficulty swings can be jarring—some bosses barely resist, others barely let you breathe. Still, between its haunting world and relentless momentum, Wuchang earns a place alongside the greats.

The story always offers something to explore

Wuchang’s world is rich with myth and mystery, but its storytelling can be hard to follow. Characters drift in and out without much buildup, often reappearing hours later in new places with little context—making major plot beats feel more confusing than impactful. Names get dropped like we should know them, but often they’re never explained. If you're the type who pores over item descriptions and connects lore dots yourself, there’s plenty to dig into. But if you just play through it straight, like I did, the narrative’s big moments land with more of a shrug than a shock. Luckily, the combat’s depth and flexibility more than make up for it.

Leveling up feels more meaningful than in most Soulslikes

Wuchang turns leveling into something far more engaging than just pumping numbers. Its massive, branching skill grid—reminiscent of Final Fantasy X's Sphere Grid—lets you shape your build with real intent, not just stat boosts. Whether you’re unlocking a burn-inflicting weapon skill or gaining passive buffs that enhance perfect dodges, each upgrade feels like a tactical choice, not a chore. Even 30 hours in, I was still uncovering new branches and abilities, constantly refining my setup. The fact that respecs are free only adds to the freedom—letting you pivot on the fly, adapt to new enemies, or experiment with wild new combos without penalty. It's one of the most flexible and rewarding progression systems in any soulslike.

Bottom line

Wuchang: Fallen Feathers is a bold and impressive debut that earns its place among the year’s best soulslikes. Its combat is fast, fluid, and endlessly customizable thanks to a standout skill system that rewards creative builds. The difficulty can spike in frustrating ways, and a few too many gotcha deaths test your patience—but those bumps don’t break the momentum. At its best, Wuchang soars, delivering a fresh, exciting twist on a genre that rarely surprises anymore.
