Combat remains interesting through the storyline
Combat in Capes remains compelling throughout the storyline, thanks to its diverse and dynamic mechanics. The triumvirate of supervillains ruling over King City are not only entertaining megalomaniacs but also bring creative boss fight challenges. Wildstar, with his Joker-like telepathy, can mess with your heroes’ minds, making them miss their first attack. Meanwhile, Primax, the anti-Tony Stark, is completely invulnerable and requires strategic maneuvering rather than direct confrontation.
The variety of enemies and minibosses, each with unique abilities, keeps battles fresh and engaging across the lengthy campaign. These encounters are bolstered by the need to chase optional objectives, adding layers of strategy as you counter a wide range of enemy types. I found myself replaying missions to perfect my tactics and earn more skill points, extending my playtime and deepening my appreciation for the combat system.
Heroes synergy - key to winning battles
In Capes, the synergy between heroes is crucial for winning battles, adding a dynamic layer to the turn-based action. While the animations might not always be top-notch, they effectively convey a sense of teamwork and energy among your squad. One of the game's standout features is how your team of four heroes can enhance each other’s abilities when positioned strategically close. Unlike the team-up system in Marvel’s Midnight Suns, Capes emphasizes position-based collaboration, with unique interactions depending on which heroes are paired together.
For instance, the speedster Mercurial can blaze a trail of fire by zipping from Ignis to the other side of the map, while Weathervane’s lightning storm becomes significantly more powerful with Kinetic’s nearby support. Mindfire can telepathically manipulate an enemy’s position, setting up Rebound for a devastating backstab. These team-ups make the choice of which heroes to bring into battle critically important. If a mission doesn’t go as planned, you can easily restart with a different squad to better handle specific challenges, such as using Facet’s crystal armor for damage mitigation.
Positioning is key, as heroes must remain within a few tiles of each other to leverage their team-up abilities. Capes smartly layers additional mechanics beyond simple attacks. Some abilities disarm enemies, disrupt their super attacks, or force them to drop weapons. Each hero also has a unique ultimate ability that charges differently, like Hyde transforming into a nanobot swarm or Ignis absorbing fire scattered across the battlefield.

Capes delivers a fresh and demanding twist on superhero-themed turn-based tactical combat, equipping you with the tools to outwit its formidable villains. The action figure-like characters shine as they unite their powers and unleash their varied ultimate abilities, effectively showcasing their teamwork. Each mission's optional objectives add depth, requiring strategic planning to tackle diverse enemy types. While the stealth missions fall a bit short, they remain largely optional. The narrative, along with the heroes and villains, is engagingly crafted, making for a thoroughly enjoyable campaign.
