Featured Game Review: Alien: Rogue Incursion
Alien: Rogue Incursion makes a confident entry into VR gaming, offering an immersive experience that captures the essence of the Alien universe. With its gripping story, standout characters, and a hauntingly atmospheric world, it delivers much of what fans crave from the franchise. Though not without its shortcomings, such as straightforward combat mechanics and somewhat predictable enemy AI, this first installment lays a solid foundation that leaves players eagerly anticipating the enhancements promised in the sequel.
At the center of Rogue Incursion is Zula Hendricks, a standout protagonist known to readers of Alien comics like Aliens: Defiance. The game efficiently introduces Zula’s backstory—an ex-colonial marine with a troubled history and chronic back pain—ensuring newcomers can jump in without prior knowledge. Set on a desolate planet overrun by Xenomorphs, she’s joined by Davis, her reformed synthetic companion with a checkered past. Their relationship provides a heartfelt counterpoint to the grim and tension-filled setting, blending humor and warmth into the bleak narrative.
Zula's relationship is what makes the storyline touching
As you navigate the eerie, desolate corridors of a forgotten colony world in Alien: Rogue Incursion, Zula Hendricks’ relationship with her synthetic companion, Davis, becomes the emotional core of the story. Davis’ dry humor and loyalty provide moments of levity in an otherwise bleak setting, transforming the narrative into something more personal and affecting. Their bond offsets the tension of constantly watching your back for lurking Xenomorphs, giving the storyline depth and heart.
This dynamic sustains the player’s interest even when the gameplay repetition starts to show. While combat is straightforward, Zula and Davis’ interactions keep you engaged, with their banter adding humanity to the relentless struggle against alien horrors. By grounding the action in this touching relationship, Rogue Incursion ensures its storyline leaves a lasting impression.
Xenomorphs feel scary
In Alien: Rogue Incursion, Xenomorphs are a terrifying presence, killing in just a hit or two and attacking with unpredictable movements like crawling walls and leaping great distances. Their erratic behavior and sudden appearances keep encounters tense and nerve-wracking. While the game leans toward action-packed battles rather than pure horror, the creatures’ unsettling hisses and speed ensure they remain a constant threat.
The weapons you’re given to fight them, however, feel underwhelming. The pulse rifle fits the Alien universe, but the shotgun and revolver feel too generic for a sci-fi setting, and the lack of a melee option makes face huggers especially dangerous. Despite these shortcomings, the Xenomorphs’ deadly efficiency and menacing design maintain the tension, making them the standout feature of the game.
Bottom Line
Alien: Rogue Incursion is a solid first step in bringing the Alien franchise to virtual reality. Its gripping story, authentic environments, and terrifying Xenomorphs deliver a memorable eight-hour experience, even if repetitive combat, predictable AI, and occasional bugs highlight its room for improvement. Despite these shortcomings, it’s an impressive proof of concept that’s sure to please both longtime Alien fans and newcomers. With its sequel already in development, Rogue Incursion sets a strong foundation for what could become an exceptional VR series.
