Featured Game Review: Lego Horizon Adventures
Lego Horizon Adventures brings the world of Horizon Zero Dawn to life with a charming, brick-built twist, transforming Aloy’s epic journey into a playful co-op action game. Like a cinematic adaptation of a beloved book, it captures the essence of the original story while simplifying and streamlining its complexities for a breezy, family-friendly experience. Fans of the Horizon series will find its familiar regions, characters, and overarching narrative delightfully reimagined, while newcomers can jump in without feeling overwhelmed by lore.
The game’s 12-hour campaign takes players through vibrant Lego versions of iconic locations like the Sacred Lands, the Snowchant Mountains, and Sunfall Desert. Each mission is packed with machines to dismantle, Lego structures to build, and collectible Studs that fuel customization and upgrades. Along the way, the lighthearted writing and comedic moments supported by the returning original voice cast add a refreshing, humorous layer to Aloy’s quest. While it may not reach the depth of its source material, Lego Horizon Adventures is a delightful journey that proves entertaining for fans of both the Horizon universe and Lego’s signature brand of fun.
Horizon world looks amazing in Lego form
The world of Horizon shines in Lego form, blending the game’s iconic post-apocalyptic landscapes with the playful creativity of the Lego brand. Familiar elements like towering ruins and derelict roads are reimagined with whimsical Lego touches, such as quirky police stations or fantastical vehicles. While these additions occasionally dilute the Horizon aesthetic, they still create a visually engaging mix of nostalgia and creativity that captures the essence of the original game. The soundtrack further enhances the charm, merging haunting melodies from Horizon Zero Dawn with upbeat, EDM-inspired tracks like Post-Apocalyptic Dance Party, which injects a whimsical energy into every encounter.
However, the level design doesn’t always match the brilliance of the world-building. Missions often follow a predictable formula: linear exploration with scattered chests, combat arenas filled with machines and cultists, and platforming sections where you chase Tallnecks or navigate basic climbing paths. Even the special Cauldron levels, with their shock-powered puzzles, don’t do enough to break the formula. While the environments and music are delightful, the repetitive gameplay can make stages feel more like completing an instruction manual than embarking on thrilling adventures.
The game perfectly adapts the main ideas of Zero Dawn
Lego Horizon Adventures successfully captures the strategic depth and resourcefulness of Horizon Zero Dawn while adapting it into a more accessible Lego format. The game introduces skill trees, one for general team upgrades and another for character-specific enhancements that bring a sense of progression without overwhelming players.
From boosting damage to extending status effects like freezing or burning enemies, these upgrades add meaningful depth to gameplay. Combat mirrors the tactical ingenuity of the original, with Aloy’s Focus letting players target specific machine parts for strategic advantages, such as disabling a Broadhead’s horns to turn its charge into a liability. This level of interaction keeps fights satisfying, especially during challenging boss encounters where skillful planning can make all the difference.
The game also incorporates elemental mechanics reminiscent of Zero Dawn, where the right weapon type can shift the tide of battle. Limited-use rare weapons and gadgets, like homing missiles or gravity bombs, add a layer of unpredictability to fights, though their random acquisition can sometimes feel frustrating. The ability to influence drop rates through skill tree investments and guaranteed loot from merchants or enemy-specific actions like dismantling Shell-Walkers helps mitigate this randomness.
Bottom Line
Lego Horizon Adventures reimagines Horizon Zero Dawn with a playful Lego twist, capturing the heart of its story and characters while adding charm and humor. Combat feels satisfying, with a range of difficulty options and clever mechanics that embrace the scavenging nature of the original game. While the randomness of rare weapons and gadgets can occasionally frustrate, the game compensates with plenty of customization options for characters and the hub town, making it fun to personalize Mother’s Heart.
Despite its visually stunning levels and excellent soundtrack, the predictable level design and limited post-campaign content leave it feeling a bit incomplete. Still, Lego Horizon Adventures delivers an enjoyable experience for fans of both franchises, even if it doesn’t quite reach the heights of its source material.
