Featured Game Review: Monster Hunter Wilds

After Monster Hunter: World opened the series to a huge new audience in 2018 and Monster Hunter Rise added cool Wirebug moves in 2021, Capcom now brings everyone into a fresh adventure with Monster Hunter Wilds. This game makes hunting feel smoother and faster, even turning big, scary monsters into easier targets. Although it feels a bit less challenging, the updated combat still makes every battle exciting.
Wilds also changes how the story is told. You still explore a mysterious land and hunt dangerous beasts, but now the characters are more fun and relatable. From the eager engineer to the kind handler and quirky biologist, each member of your team brings personality to the journey. This friendly approach helps new players join in easily, while longtime fans still enjoy the thrill of the hunt.
Returning to town is now a thing of the past
Gone are the days of returning to town after every hunt. In Monster Hunter Wilds, you can eat food to get a buff that lasts for a set time, and it stays active even when you are at camp. This change makes the process of preparing for a hunt much smoother. Instead of stopping your adventure to reset everything, you now simply check your map for monster details, mount up, and head straight into the action.
The wild areas are full of surprises with changing weather that can turn a landscape from dusty to stormy, or even into a lush, vibrant scene. These weather changes may not change your hunt a lot, but they can affect which monsters you meet.
The game offers a mix of old favorites and new creatures—from returning threats like Gore Magala to fresh faces like Lala Barina, along with standout monsters like Arkveld and Nu Udra. The combat feels both exciting and forgiving, allowing you to adjust your moves during fights without losing the challenge of learning each monster’s behavior.
The wilds never present any genuine threats
The new Focus Mode lets you easily lock onto a monster’s weak spots, letting you hit limbs until they open up into Wounds. Every weapon comes with a simple Focus Strike that bursts through these Wounds, so you can quickly break a monster’s defenses. While this setup adds a neat twist to combat, it also means that battles rarely force you to plan your moves carefully.
In practice, Wilds never really presents a real threat. Whether playing online, with your AI Support Hunters, or alongside your Palico helper, the fights feel too short and forgiving. Even the tougher monsters barely test your skills, and the game lets you farm rare materials almost effortlessly. It’s clear that while these changes make the game more welcoming, they also take away much of the challenge that made previous hunts feel rewarding.
Bottom line
Monster Hunter Wilds smooths out many of the rough edges from earlier games, cutting down on the extra steps that used to slow you down. It makes fighting monsters fast and fun, so you can grab awesome weapons and put them right to use without any hassle. But in its push for ease and accessibility, Wilds sometimes feels a bit too simple. The challenge is dialed back, and you rarely need to dive deep into the equipment system to come out on top. While the new, flexible combat is a blast, it shines brightly for only a short time—leaving us to hope that Capcom will eventually introduce tougher endgame monsters to put our skills to the test.

Every newsletter has a lot to look forward to, and we are in active communication with several developers and studios. More to come next week!
