Featured Game Review: Phantom Blade Zero
Phantom Blade Zero is shaping up to be one of the most visually striking action RPGs of 2026, combining the style and choreography of classic wuxia films with a darker fantasy world that feels distinctly its own. Players take control of Soul, a warrior framed for the murder of his master and left with only 66 days to live. It’s a strong premise, but what immediately stands out is the game’s atmosphere: rain-soaked villages, crumbling ruins, mechanical technology and traditional Chinese architecture combine to create the “kungfupunk” aesthetic developer S-GAME has been promoting.
Weapons
Combat appears to be the real star. Rather than relying entirely on the slower, more defensive style commonly associated with Souls-like games, Phantom Blade Zero emphasizes speed, flowing combos, counters, dodges and carefully timed deflections. More than 30 primary weapons and over 20 additional Phantom Edges are planned, giving players plenty of room to experiment with different fighting styles. The animations shown so far are particularly impressive, with fights often looking more like carefully choreographed martial-arts sequences than traditional videogame battles. S-GAME has even brought martial-arts performers and choreographers into the production, with Donnie Yen serving as a creative consultant.
Alternative Routes
There also appears to be considerably more happening outside of combat than the early trailers suggested. Phantom Blade Zero takes place in a dark semi-open world filled with hidden paths, mechanisms, side quests and secrets, rather than simply pushing players through a sequence of boss fights. That could give exploration some real purpose, particularly if discovering new areas consistently rewards players with weapons, story details or alternative routes. The combination of an intriguing conspiracy surrounding Soul, multiple characters within the Wulin and the unusual 66-day premise gives the story plenty of potential as well.
Of course, the biggest question is whether Phantom Blade Zero can maintain the incredible pace and presentation of its demonstrations across an entire game. Flashy trailers are one thing; making dozens of hours of combat remain responsive, varied and satisfying is considerably harder. Still, everything S-GAME has revealed so far suggests this could be much more than another Souls-inspired action RPG.
Bottom Line
The combat, exploration and wonderfully strange wuxia-meets-industrial-fantasy setting, Phantom Blade Zero has a legitimate chance to become one of 2026's standout action games.
