Featured Game Review: Hollow Knight: Silksong

Patience may be a virtue, but Hollow Knight: Silksong proves that waiting can also sharpen anticipation into something unforgettable. Dropping players into the perilous kingdom of Pharloom, this long-awaited sequel fuses exploration, intricate platforming, and razor-sharp combat into an experience that feels both achingly familiar and daringly new. It doesn’t overturn the Metroidvania formula, but its refusal to soften the edges means every climb, every battle, and every secret uncovered carries the sting of effort—and the thrill of reward.
Excellent hero and fascinating world
Pharloom is a land of contrasts—a dying kingdom where pilgrims climb from its shadowed depths toward the gleaming Citadel above, most never living to see its promise. As Hornet, you’re caught in this cycle of struggle and survival, and the design ensures you feel it with every step. Much like Celeste tied its story of perseverance to a literal mountain, Silksong makes its themes inseparable from its mechanics. Every climb, every fall, and every return to the path reinforces the idea of being tested and finding grace in failure.
This world is as punishing as it is beautiful. Areas like the toxic swamps of Bilewater push you to the edge, stripping away resources until each mistake feels unbearable—yet never impossible. Break away, return later with new tools and insight, and what once felt insurmountable becomes second nature. That balance between despair and triumph defines Silksong. It’s less about brute force and more about learning, adapting, and letting the world shape your journey as much as you shape it.
Pharloom itself is unforgettable. Coral canyons glowing with life, snowy peaks that bite at you with cold, golden halls that echo with faith and decay—each new biome feels like a revelation. Christopher Larkin’s score shifts seamlessly between mournful strings and luminous crescendos, making every discovery land harder. Like the best sequels, Silksong looks how you remember Hollow Knight—yet in comparison, the original suddenly feels muted. Every dial is turned higher: more color, more spectacle, more hidden paths, and the constant sense that the map still has surprises waiting in its shadows.
Bottom line
Hollow Knight: Silksong takes everything that made the original beloved and pushes it further—faster traversal, richer environments, and combat that balances precision with relentlessness. Its quests sometimes stumble and the finale may divide players, but the overall journey is a masterclass in challenge and discovery. What lingers isn’t just the thrill of victory in boss fights, but the sense of carving meaning out of an unforgiving world, of persevering through defeat, and of leaving Pharloom changed in your wake. It’s a demanding sequel, bold and unflinching, yet one that rewards patience with moments of beauty that stay long after the credits.
