A big welcome back to all Loot Happens subscribers. Loot Happens is a weekly newsletter that is emailed and posted on LootHappens.com.

It's important to note that for premium subscribers, game offerings and in-game content, every week is different. Sometimes it's in-game codes, Steam keys, and giveaways, but premium members will always get something special every mailing. We also occasionally get mind-blowing early access or premium games that pay for an entire year's subscription.

Each newsletter is generally structured as Premium Loot > Free Sub Giveaways > Game Feature > Game discounts.

The old saying goes that war never changes, but Hell Is Us asks what happens when the brutality of conflict becomes flesh, manifesting as monsters that trap people in cycles of their worst deeds. Set in the fictional country of Hadea, this action-adventure blends exploration, puzzle solving, and deliberate combat into a journey that feels both familiar and unnervingly raw. It doesn’t reinvent the genre, but its refusal to give you a map or handholding makes every solved puzzle, every enemy encounter, and every grim discovery feel like a hard-earned step through a world scarred by both human cruelty and supernatural horror.

No Map, No Mercy

Without a map, waypoints, or automatic quest tracking, Hell Is Us demands old-school note-taking and attention to detail. Early puzzles can be frustrating when it’s unclear whether you have the right items to progress, and Act One sometimes feels like running in circles. But as the game opens up, NPC conversations and environmental clues start to guide you more naturally, and the bleak world of Hadea comes into sharper focus. Every interaction reinforces the theme that humanity’s cruelty can be worse than any monster, with survivors’ stories often hitting harder than the Hollow creatures themselves.

That weight carries into the time loop mechanic, where areas of past atrocities must be cleared to lift their curse. The idea is powerful, though the guardian fights rarely live up to their grim backstories. Combat overall is solid but not spectacular—parries, combos, and flashy executions get the job done without ever truly impressing. Weapon variety and emotional augments like Rage or Terror add some flavor, letting you tailor builds to your style. Yet, the system never quite reaches the stylish heights of its inspirations. It’s a mix of ambition and restraint, where atmosphere often outshines the action

Bottom line

Hell Is Us is an action-adventure that trades handholding for observation, rewarding players who slow down and pay attention. Its puzzles and exploration often shine brighter than its serviceable combat, which can feel too straightforward and repetitive at times. But what lingers isn’t the monster fights—it’s the stark imagery of a war-torn nation and the reminder that humanity’s cruelty cuts deeper than any supernatural foe. It’s a bold, sometimes uncomfortable experience that may not be the flashiest of the genre, but it sticks with you long after the credits.
