Featured Game Review: Dune: Awakening

Dune: Awakening reimagines the survival MMO genre through the lens of one of sci-fi’s most iconic sandboxes—and for the most part, it works. After over 100 hours spent scavenging, sweating, and scheming across the dunes of Arrakis, it’s clear that Funcom didn’t just adapt Frank Herbert’s world—they inhaled it. From lore-deep story beats to design decisions that double down on the harshness of the desert, Awakening delivers an experience that’s both deeply authentic and sometimes maddeningly stubborn.
Set in an alternate timeline where Paul Atreides was never born, the game grants players freedom to explore the politics, factions, and landscapes of the Dune universe without being shackled to canon. This creative latitude pays off: familiar faces emerge in surprising ways, and the story takes twists that wouldn’t be possible within the traditional narrative arc. The result is a world that feels alive, if not always convenient or forgiving.
A legendary setting is here
What makes Dune: Awakening stand out is its unflinching dedication to the source material. Arrakis isn’t just the setting, it’s your first and most persistent enemy. Sunlight can cook you alive in seconds, sandworms punish prolonged exposure to open ground, and sandstorms sweep in to erase careless players. Survival means adapting to the planet’s hostility, turning environmental hazards into progression gates that feel meaningful rather than arbitrary.
That commitment pays off in gameplay that constantly keeps you on your toes. Crafting your first vehicle just to cross a sun-scorched wasteland, upgrading your gear to survive irradiated zones, or carefully navigating terrain to avoid detection—all of it turns the act of surviving into a strategic dance. The world doesn’t just look like Dune, it feels like it. Every success comes with the satisfying sense that you’ve earned your place here.
Still, the game’s loyalty to the lore occasionally gets in its way. You’re forced into a nomadic loop, uprooting your base as you unlock new zones—true to the fiction, but frustrating in practice. Combat, too, can be uneven: Holtzman shields render guns mostly useless, leaving you stuck in repetitive melee encounters that lack variety. Even so, Awakening’s harsh authenticity creates moments no other survival game can offer.
Bottom line
Dune: Awakening nails what so many adaptations miss; it doesn’t just use the Dune universe as set dressing, it lives and breathes it. From the blistering heat of Arrakis to the political tension simmering beneath every alliance, the game turns survival into a fully immersive experience. Climbing from nothing to carving out your place in this hostile world feels genuinely rewarding at every stage. For players who crave challenge, atmosphere, and a deep connection to the world they’re exploring, Dune: Awakening is a must-try. It's not perfect, but its strengths are powerful enough to carry the experience far across the sands.
