Featured Game Review: Elden Ring Nightreign

Elden Ring: Nightreign is FromSoftware getting weird, in a good way. It takes the world and feel of Elden Ring and spins it into a fast-paced roguelite built around short, intense runs and three-player co-op. You and your team land on a spooky island called Limveld, where each run plays out over three in-game days. The first two are spent gearing up and fighting tough enemies; the third is all about facing a huge boss called a Nightlord. Every run changes things up just enough—enemy spots, events, even random invasions—to keep you guessing.
The big catch? You need a squad. You can play solo, but it’s rough—like, “why am I doing this to myself?” rough. The game is designed for a full team of three players who are around the same skill level and can stay together for a full run. Without that, the game starts to fall apart a little—some systems feel unbalanced, and the excitement fades. But if you can get the right group together, Nightreign is something special. It’s not just more Elden Ring, it’s a new way to experience it: faster, riskier, and built around surviving together or dying, loudly, as a team.
Random events create chaos
Time is always working against you in Nightreign. Each run takes place under a ticking clock, with a shrinking circle slowly closing in, just like a battle royale. It’s a clever twist that forces you to keep moving, keep fighting, and stay efficient. You can’t just explore at your own pace or grind endlessly for gear. Every minute counts, and the pressure only builds as the map gets smaller and the final boss fight draws closer. It creates a sense of urgency that fits perfectly with the game's tone: you're not just exploring Limveld, you're surviving it.
Random events shake things up constantly, from surprise ambushes and summoned enemies to unexpected challenges that change your route. Enemy camps aren’t just simple brawls; many are built for teams, requiring you to split up and take on multiple strong enemies at once. Try that solo, and it turns into a punishing slog. Even regular skirmishes become dangerous when you're outnumbered, and the big boss battles? They practically scream bring friends. While there’s some solo balancing in place, like increased damage output, it doesn’t go far enough.
Inventory and stat management are very simple
Nightreign keeps its gear and stat systems refreshingly simple. Instead of micromanaging inventory, your real progress comes from learning the map, figuring out which camps are worth your time, which bosses to skip, and how to move efficiently before the circle closes in. Over time, this builds a satisfying sense of mastery that’s tied more to player knowledge than stat screens. The only real annoyance is the clunky wall climbing, which can slow you down just when you need to move fast.
Relics handle the game’s meta-progression, offering small buffs and bonuses between runs. At first, they feel random and barely useful, but with enough play, they start to shape stronger builds. The downside is how little control you have over what you earn. Outside of a small shop and a few class quests, most relics drop at random—great if you're lucky, frustrating if you're not. A bit more choice would make the system feel a lot more rewarding.
Bottom line
Elden Ring: Nightreign is an exciting spin-off that shines when played exactly as intended—with a full squad of three, tight coordination, and a shared thirst for challenge. Its eight distinct classes are all fun to master, the Nightlord boss fights are some of the best FromSoftware has ever made, and the time-based structure creates constant tension and thrilling moments. When it all clicks, it’s one of the best co-op experiences out there. But that high comes with a steep price. No crossplay, limited matchmaking, and a near-unplayable solo mode make it hard to recommend for anyone without a reliable team. It’s an ambitious game with flashes of brilliance, but only if you can bring your crew. Without that, the frustration sets in fast.
