In the opening moments of South of Midnight, we meet Hazel, a young woman coming to grips with her burgeoning powers that blend the mystical with the tragic. As she learns to manipulate the magical threads of an ethereal realm, the stage is set for an experience that deftly weaves folklore from the American South into a deeply personal narrative. In just 12 hours, Compulsion Games crafts a compact yet resonant action-adventure, balancing myth and mortality with a clear, compelling artistic vision.
Hazel’s journey is as much about battling otherworldly demons as it is about unearthing the sorrowful histories of her hometown, Prospero. Though fictional, Prospero feels palpably real, its dilapidated structures and haunting landscapes echoing the genuine struggles of Southern communities weathering past adversities. Here, the local and the universal collide, offering players an intimate glimpse into collective pain, guilt, and the enduring legacy of trauma.
South of Midnight stands out because of its strong base and all the surrounding details
South of Midnight features a mix of Haints that keep combat interesting. Some of these enemies are quick and hard to catch, while others are big and can tunnel underground to deal heavy damage. Hazel also has her quirky puppet, Crouton, who can take control of enemies for a short time, making it fun to decide which threat to tackle first. The game throws in a few boss fights to raise the stakes, though many of the combat moments reuse the same basic ideas.
What makes the game shine is its unique look and style. South of Midnight uses beautiful character designs and a distinct stop-motion animation style that makes key story moments stand out. If you prefer, you can turn off the stop-motion effect, but even without it, the detailed facial expressions and strong voice acting bring the characters to life. The authentic accents and familiar local language add a genuine touch that ties the story and its characters directly to the American South.

South of Midnight brings Southern folklore to life in a fresh and lively way. The game reimagines familiar legends with a modern twist, think of figures like Florida's Two-Toed Tom and the Cajun Rougarou appearing as challenging foes, while even Alabama’s Huggin’ Molly gets a new, captivating take. These mythical creatures are not just part of the scenery; they mirror the struggles and heartaches of the local people, blending well-known urban myths with the personal stories of the characters.
At the same time, the game pays respect to the real history of the South.
