Featured Game Review: The First Berserker: Khazan

Playing The First Berserker: Khazan is a brutal, punishing journey that leaves you both exhausted and oddly exhilarated. My hands ache and my brain feels fried from hours of relentless, often infuriating combat that pushes you to your very limits—each defeat reshaping you into a sharper, more lethal force.
At its core, this classic revenge tale follows Khazan, a once-celebrated general betrayed by his empire, forced to confront both personal demons and external foes. Revived by a host of vengeful warrior spirits known as The Blade Phantom, Khazan is driven to exact his retribution against those who wronged him. Though the narrative may lean on familiar revenge tropes, its raw, uncompromising difficulty and relentless pace make every battle a test of endurance and skill.
By the end of the roughly 85-hour campaign, your Khazan feels different
By the end of the roughly 85-hour campaign, Khazan emerges as a completely transformed warrior, refined by countless battles and extensive experimentation. Each weapon in his arsenal is paired with its detailed skill tree, allowing players to fine-tune everything from basic attacks to charged, heavy blows, adjust stamina costs for actions like dodging and blocking, and even unlock entirely new moves using Spirit Points.
The ability to swap between three distinct weapons means that every switch feels dramatic, almost like changing classes on the fly. While this depth offers exciting opportunities to tailor Khazan’s combat style, it also demands a slow, deliberate process of trial and error. Ultimately, the painstaking effort required to master each weapon and its unique abilities is what makes every hard-fought victory all the more rewarding.
What used to be the most frustrating moment eventually became favorite part
Conquering early, seemingly insurmountable challenges ultimately became the highlight of the experience, thanks to quality-of-life improvements that turned frustration into progress. Rather than punishing repeated failures, every defeat against a boss rewards players with valuable Lacrima, allowing for incremental upgrades that make the next attempt just a little bit easier. Separately, skill points earned through continuous combat, rather than solely through leveling up, unlock new moves and enhance favorite attacks, providing just the edge needed to overcome stubborn encounters.
As the campaign unfolds, the importance of powerful gear comes into sharp focus. Upgrading weapons, armor, and accessories with specific attributes—from improved stamina regeneration to elemental resistances—allows Khazan to evolve into a true force on the battlefield. Optional side quests, which remix earlier areas and introduce fresh challenges, offer not only essential crafting materials and gear blueprints but also add depth to the narrative. With even the post-game unveiling of entirely new classes of weapons, the gradual mastery of these systems transforms the once maddening difficulty spikes into a rewarding and unforgettable journey.
Bottom line
Bottom Line: After gaining the necessary abilities and finding a rhythm, the devastating bosses in The First Berserker: Khazan become the true highlight of the experience. They are the driving force behind this brutal yet impressive soulslike, growing ever more satisfying as the journey unfolds. Though the early climb can be steep and demoralizing, the thrill of executing split-second guards and dodges—and then striking back with a flurry of steel—makes every hard-won victory all the more rewarding. For those willing to invest the time and practice, this is a game that, despite its harsh difficulty, offers a deeply gratifying challenge.
