Featured Game Review: Assassin's Creed Shadows

Assassin’s Creed Shadows is a completely new chapter for the legendary franchise, a journey that, after nearly two decades and countless titles, finally ventures into the mysterious and turbulent world of feudal Japan. This instalment invites players to step into a land where honor, betrayal, and timeless legends intertwine. At its heart, the game introduces us to two compelling protagonists: Naoe, the sharp-witted and broody shinobi among the last of the Iga clan, and Yasuke. Their dynamic partnership not only balances the narrative but also breathes life into a world replete with both traditional samurai values and the intricate, morally gray undertones that have become a hallmark of the Assassin’s Creed series.
Shadows also refine the gameplay that fans have come to love. By streamlining maps and skill trees while honing the tight, challenging combat that made Assassin’s Creed Mirage so memorable, the game promises a more focused and rewarding experience. Although not without its imperfections, imbalances and missed opportunities do surface, the fusion of familiar mechanics with a revitalized setting feels like a confident stride towards reinvention. With Assassin’s Creed Shadows, the series doesn’t just revisit its roots; it redefines them, setting the stage for a compelling tale of revenge, honor, and redemption in the war-torn Sengoku period of Japan.
The story unfolds in pieces, making it easy to follow and enjoy
This game adopts a structure reminiscent of Valhalla, dividing its narrative across nine regions, each functioning as a mostly self-contained chapter. However, it improves on that formula by ensuring characters and story threads don’t just vanish when you move on. Lords and merchants you meet early on often reappear later or leave an impression that echoes throughout the broader story.
Pacing is another area where Shadows shines. Each chapter feels brisker and more purposeful than in previous entries, with less filler bogging down your progress. While there are still a few too many “go here, do that” errands between big story moments, the flow is well-organized, letting players enjoy the tale in digestible pieces—much like reading a good novel chapter by chapter. Missions typically start from an expansive objective board adapted from Mirage, which smartly lays out who needs help and who needs to disappear. This fits perfectly with the game’s espionage tone and replaces clunky quest logs with something far more intuitive and immersive.
This board also adds a touch of detective work, encouraging players to study clues and deduce where to go next. Rather than holding your hand, the game rewards map familiarity and careful observation—sometimes with the help of scouts, though their use comes at a cost. This trade-off adds tension and strategy, especially early on, even if it occasionally sacrifices the thrill of pure exploration.
Cosmetics can be unlocked just by completing tasks and looting
Your hideout, a refined evolution of Valhalla’s Ravensthorpe settlement, doubles as a practical base and a treasure trove of cosmetic rewards. By gathering resources during your adventures, you can upgrade buildings that unlock a variety of aesthetic options, making it easy to personalize your space. Even if you’re not keen on base management, you’ll naturally earn cosmetics through tasks and looting, while key structures like the dojo even grant new abilities such as summoning trusted allies.
Beyond the hideout, the world of 1500s Japan captivates with its dynamic, breathtaking landscapes. Each season transforms the scenery—from the fiery hues of autumn to the serene whites of winter—while the dynamic weather system brings thunderstorms and natural reactions to life in real-time. This immersive environment, coupled with a surprisingly bug-free experience, ensures that every journey feels both rewarding and visually stunning.
Bottom line
Assassin’s Creed Shadows cuts through the long-established norms of the series with a more refined, skill-driven approach. The combat is aggressive and demands precise parrying and tactical management, while the revamped map invites you to explore the breathtaking provinces of Sengoku-period Japan. Protagonists Naoe and Yasuke are well-realized and memorable, their unique playstyles complementing each other—even if the narrative sometimes treads familiar ground and leans more on the stealthy finesse of a master shinobi over the raw power of a samurai. For longtime fans with countless hours logged in the Animus, Shadows offers a refreshing realignment of the series’ mechanics and storytelling, making it an essential chapter that shouldn't be missed.
