Featured Game Review: Split Fiction

Fresh off their Game of the Year triumph with It Takes Two, Hazelight Studios returns with yet another creative co-op crusade in Split Fiction. This is a game that seems determined to cram in every idea the team has ever had, resulting in a fearless mash-up of puzzle-platforming, third-person action, side-scrolling, and even extreme sports elements. At its core, though, Split Fiction tells the story of two struggling authors, Zoe and Mio, who are tricked into a high-tech publishing deal that quickly goes awry. Their clash of personalities—and the immersive, genre-blending sequences they’re thrust into—propels a ceaseless string of clever puzzles, acrobatic set-pieces, and twin-stick shootouts. Through it all, there’s a constant sense of energetic invention that ensures you’re never quite sure what’s waiting around the corner.
The game is a two-finger salute to tech-bro plagiarism
The basic setup is instantly understandable, and you wonder why more games haven’t done it before: two struggling authors, Zoe and Mio, end up trapped in a virtual world where a shady tech company is stealing their creativity and selling it for profit. Split Fiction arrives in 2025 as a direct shot at the modern plague of AI tools that scrape and reuse people’s hard work without giving anything back. Hazelight Studios doesn’t tiptoe around the issue, either—this game is a bold jab at so-called “innovators” who treat art like a product rather than a passion. The story stays lively and humorous, which makes you want to cheer Zoe and Mio on as they fight back against their crooked publisher.
But even with that in-your-face message, Split Fiction also shines through its smooth, fast-paced platforming. Each hero can jump, double-jump, and air dash right from the start, letting them bounce off walls, zip around on grappling hooks, and land on rails or ledges with ease. It’s similar to It Takes Two in how quickly you learn the moves, so both beginners and veteran players can join in without hitting painful difficulty spikes. Generous checkpoints and quick respawns mean a missed jump or sudden knockout won’t hold you back for long. When you’re ready to take a stand against those greedy tech bros, Split Fiction makes sure you can do it in style.
This game is an explosive test of friendship
Split Fiction is built to keep the fun flowing, even if one of you lags. If you’re playing co-op with a less experienced partner, the option to skip a particularly punishing obstacle and jump straight to the next checkpoint is always there as a last-ditch option. The main goal is to make sure nobody feels stuck or left out. The designers want you breezing through Zoe and Mio’s ever-shifting worlds, not banging your head against the same hurdle for an hour. It’s a brilliant way to prevent frustration, ensuring friends (or family members) stay on good terms instead of getting annoyed at each other’s mistakes.
But the real magic is how Split Fiction constantly changes gears to keep you hooked. One moment you’re swerving through neon-soaked sci-fi highways buzzing with flying traffic; the next, you’re tackling colossal fantasy beasts that feel straight out of Shadow of the Colossus. Because Zoe writes fantasy and Mio prefers sci-fi, each world you visit reflects their different imaginations, creating levels that rarely repeat the same trick twice. Whether it’s futuristic ninjas or towering dragons, the game delights in mixing up both the backdrop and the gameplay every step of the way. There’s always a new idea to master or a new twist to unravel, making it nearly impossible to quit once you’ve started
Bottom line
Split Fiction is a masterclass in co-op design, bouncing between wildly different ideas at such a pace that nothing feels tired or repetitive. Each new concept sticks around just long enough to excite you before something equally unexpected takes its place, creating an unbroken chain of creative highlights over its roughly 14-hour runtime. It’s a nonstop rollercoaster of gameplay twists—part platformer, part action game, part puzzler, and more—that never feels disjointed.
Hazelight Studios has spent a decade pushing the boundaries of cooperative play, and Split Fiction is their best effort yet. This is a game that respects both your time and your friendship, handing you and your partner a steady stream of fresh experiences to enjoy together, while making sure nothing ever derails your momentum.
