Avowed is a return to that traditional action RPG comfort food we know and love. Yet while you’re busy unleashing devastating spells on reanimated skeletons and clashing with fierce, scaly foes in pursuit of glittering new gear, it becomes clear that Avowed leans heavily on the beloved formulas of past RPG giants.
Your quest? To traverse the untamed expanse of the Living Lands, battling a mysterious madness known as the Dreamscourge while lending a hand to every troubled soul you encounter. Whether you’re delving into crumbling ruins, winding sewers, or forgotten subterranean lairs in search of loot and experience, every skirmish and decision feels both familiar and comfortingly executed. And while the game might not revolutionize the genre, its standout dialogue and narrative, unraveling the enigma of the Dreamscourge and the forces beyond, make each choice carry weight.

Bantering with your eclectic band of companions is one of Avowed’s true delights. Each character comes with their distinct personality, skills, and quirks—like Kai, the sarcastic reptilian mercenary with an unexpected fondness for woodworking—making every conversation feel like an essential part of the adventure. Whether you're untangling their dramas or relying on their unique combat and puzzle-solving abilities, the interplay between these characters enriches your journey across the Living Lands, transforming routine quests into memorable social escapades.
Adding the unashamed, catlike mage Yatzli into the mix guarantees plenty of playful innuendos, infusing the game with a lighthearted charm amid its high-stakes battles. Her cheeky banter and relentless attitude not only provide comic relief during tense moments but also deepen the sense of camaraderie among the party. Together, these dynamic interactions ensure that even as you face down reanimated skeletons and violent foes, the rich tapestry of dialogue and character interplay remains a standout feature of Avowed.

This palpable sense of urgency underscores a key design choice in Avowed: while the focus on mobility and parkour injects a welcome burst of activity between battles, it also means that backtracking loses much of its charm. Once an area is cleared, there's little incentive to linger, leaving the world feeling transient and meticulously staged for one swift, forward-moving adventure.
Bottom Line
Avowed offers top-notch worldbuilding and character writing, rekindling the magic that made Obsidian's RPGs so memorable. Still, the game plays it safe with a familiar, by-the-numbers fantasy adventure that rarely strays into bold new territory, and the enemy variety leaves its swords-and-sorcery battles feeling a bit repetitive. Even so, it's a perfectly competent experience, boasting chaotic combat, a robust leveling system, satisfying loot progression, and meaningful choices that can dramatically shape the world. Plus, its technical stability is a refreshing change from its often unreliable peers. I had a great time exploring Eora, and you'll likely find that while Avowed doesn't reinvent the wheel, it delivers all the solid, nostalgic RPG thrills you crave.
