Featured Game Review: Call of Duty: Black Ops 6
Since the launch of Modern Warfare and the addition of Warzone, the Call of Duty franchise has felt more iterative than ever. Complaints that CoD games are just reskins have been around since 2008, but it’s hard to deny how strikingly accurate that has become in recent years.
For the past five years, each title in the franchise has primarily catered to Warzone, transforming the series into a platform of sorts for the wildly popular battle royale. As a result, many fans have grown wary of spending $70 on what feels like an expansion for the CoD HQ ecosystem. But now, five years into the Warzone experiment—and with its player count a shadow of what it was in 2020—it seems Activision is ready to shift gears with Black Ops 6.
This installment aims to recapture the franchise’s spirit with something fresh and surprising. But there’s an open question: does the world still want these arcade-style shooters? The lukewarm reception of XDefiant suggests the genre’s best days may be behind us. Even so, it looks like Black Ops 6 might just be the welcome exception for die-hard fans.
Omni-movement is one of the most promising additions of the last years
In Black Ops 6, the gameplay offers some distinct new features, but let's cover the essentials before we dive into the big one: omni-movement. The time-to-kill (TTK) feels slightly faster than last year's entry, though it still leans toward the longer side compared to earlier CoD games. Gunplay remains smooth with barely any visual recoil, although weapons might feel a bit lighter than usual—something Treyarch games have historically leaned into. Perks and field upgrades are intelligently balanced, though a few additions might be a bit too playful for those who prefer a more grounded loadout.
Now, onto omni-movement, Black Ops 6's most ambitious addition, allowing players to sprint, dive, and pivot in any direction. This mechanic lets players dodge enemy fire, dive through windows, or launch themselves backward, adding a dynamic layer of chaos to every encounter. The freedom of movement provides a cinematic, fast-paced experience that feels deeply satisfying and incredibly visceral in the heat of battle.
For many, omni-movement might be the best innovation the CoD series has seen in years — it's the type of experimentation the franchise needed. However, impressions of the feature have been mixed. During the beta, friends were split; fans of run-and-gun or aggressive playstyles loved it, while players who prefer slower, more tactical gameplay found it less intuitive. If you’re used to taking a strategic post-up with an assault rifle, Black Ops 6’s fast-paced multiplayer might not offer the ideal experience.
Multiplayer mode feels natural
The multiplayer mode in Black Ops 6 feels remarkably natural, blending the familiarity of CoD gunplay with some refreshing elements. This review is based on the recent beta weekends, so I won’t dive into areas like skill-based matchmaking (SBMM) or progression, as we were level-capped with a limited player pool. However, from what I experienced, the maps are visually engaging, the game’s flow is smooth, and weapon balance — while destined to fall into a predictable meta — seems solid. This time, SMGs seem to be in the spotlight, adding a new twist for fans eager for a different type of playstyle.
With a slightly longer TTK and the innovative omni-movement mechanic, Black Ops 6 has plenty to offer players who enjoy a rewarding grind. The mechanics encourage players to master each weapon, though the consistently small, fast-paced maps may create an experience that feels like a "grind sim" over time. While this provides an addictive quick draw of dopamine and fast leveling, it raises questions about the game’s long-term appeal for those seeking a deeper, more varied experience.
My biggest concern lies in the map selection for competitive play. Treyarch’s dedication to competitive balance is commendable, but the lack of larger, mid-sized maps may limit the options for the ranked playlist. An SMG-dominated meta can be exciting, but it also needs maps that encourage strategic depth, not just fast reflexes. Ideally, Black Ops 6 will launch with some larger maps that go beyond the usual “break glass in case of emergency” re-releases of fan-favorite maps like Raid.
Bottom Line
Black Ops 6 feels like one of the stronger entries in recent CoD history — certainly a step above Vanguard and MWII. The gameplay changes are genuinely refreshing, and with Treyarch at the helm, we can look forward to a Zombies mode that’s sure to deliver. However, the multiplayer maps leave a bit to be desired, especially for those who want more than high-speed, close-quarters battles. I’m also keeping an eye on the progression system, one of the few aspects CoD has truly nailed recently. Here’s hoping they steer clear of the grind-heavy pitfalls of previous titles, keeping Black Ops 6 both engaging and rewarding for the long haul.
