Your Wagon Is Only Companion
Pacific Drive throws a unique twist on the survival genre. Instead of juggling various resources and crafting stations, your primary focus is your car. It's more than just a vehicle; it's your home base, your trusted companion, your shield, your arsenal, and an extension of your skills, all rolled into one.
This trusty yet rickety car goes with you everywhere, taking a beating for you every step of the way. In return, it demands constant care and upgrades. While you can customize it to a certain extent, its core personality shines through in its loose steering, bouncy suspension, and powerful engine rumble.
Your car in Pacific Drive is not just a beat-up station wagon into which the game has thrown you into. It will be your main companion in battling the environment, so be ready to accept its quirks that can add both amusement and frustration to the gameplay. You might experience an engine cut-out during a high-speed chase or the hood popping open right as you need clear vision.
These quirks require real problem-solving. At the "Tinker Station," you get to play mechanic, using a "logic puzzle" system to diagnose and fix the car's issues. However, it might be real tough. Getting stuck with a quirk you can't solve can be a real buzzkill, especially when you're eager to get back behind the wheel.
Bottom Line
While Pacific Drive is not going to be the game of the year or best-selling game in 2024, it outperforms in its genre. Pacific Drive is an experience unlike any other. It takes the familiar survival genre and injects it with a unique focus on your car, transforming it from a mere vehicle into a living, breathing companion. Exploration, challenge, upgrading and maintaining your car creates a satisfying loop that makes you want to play this game again and again. It actually can creep in the mid-game, but it doesn't worsen the overall experience, making Pacific Drive an unforgettable adventure for players seeking something fresh and yet engaging.
