In the early 2000s, the Star Wars universe was rapidly expanding, both on-screen and in the gaming world. While the prequel trilogy delved into Anakin Skywalker's journey, LucasArts explored new stories and characters through video games. Among these was Star Wars: Bounty Hunter, a 2002 action-adventure title for the GameCube and PlayStation 2 that cast players as Jango Fett, the formidable bounty hunter from Attack of the Clones. Known for its challenging gameplay and sometimes awkward controls, the game nonetheless offered an exciting glimpse into the galaxy's underworld.

Now, Aspyr has resurrected this classic with a remastered edition for the Nintendo Switch. This new release aims to capture the essence of the original while updating it for a modern audience. Despite the enhancements, Star Wars: Bounty Hunter Remaster remains a nostalgic trip through a familiar, yet dated, galaxy.

Good remaster of low-tier game

Bounty Hunter is easier to play now thanks to a modern control scheme and a steady framerate. It also looks about as good as a 20-year-old PS2 game can look, thanks to improved textures, lighting, and resolution. The developers added a flashlight to help navigate darker areas, and time now slows down when using Jango’s scanner, which is a helpful addition.

While there are other weapons to find in the various missions, they are never good enough to compete with your standard dual blasters, which pack a punch, fire as fast as you can pull the trigger, and have infinite ammo. You never need to swap to anything else.

There is a jetpack in Bounty Hunter, which you get early on in the game. Jetpacking around, despite its quirks, adds a layer of excitement to the gameplay. Mastering the jetpack and camera controls can be rewarding, making aerial maneuvers during firefights a fun and exhilarating experience.

Bounty hunting in the game, while occasionally challenging, offers a rewarding experience. Tracking down targets and capturing bounties add a layer of strategy and depth, providing a break from the straightforward combat.

Same game - same problems

However, it’s time to acknowledge the Bantha in the room: Bounty Hunter was never a perfect game. Despite this, it’s the unique charm and nostalgic appeal that continues to draw players back. The levels, while spacious, offer a sense of exploration and discovery. Each hallway and corner of the map keeps you guessing about what lies ahead. The enemies, though not the most challenging, provide a steady stream of action, and the thrill of blasting through waves of foes with Jango's dual blasters is undeniably satisfying. The quirky AI and repetitive combat are part of the game's character, adding to its old-school gaming charm.

Bottom Line

Star Wars: Bounty Hunter Remaster succeeds in bringing a classic into the modern era with notable visual and performance upgrades. While it retains some of the quirks and limitations of the original 2002 release, the enhancements make it a more enjoyable experience for both nostalgic fans and newcomers. The improved controls and visuals breathe new life into Jango Fett's galactic adventures, making it easier to appreciate the game's unique charm and action-packed gameplay. If you're a Star Wars enthusiast or a fan of early 2000s gaming, this remaster offers a fun, albeit dated, journey through the galaxy.
