Featured Game Review: College Football 25 [PS 5 & Xbox Series]
The long-awaited moment has arrived: EA Sports College Football 25 is here, and it's a game that could make even the most seasoned football fans' hearts race with excitement. After years of yearning and speculation, this title promises to rekindle the magic of NCAA Football 14, all while offering something fresh for those only familiar with Madden. But does it deliver on that promise, or is it just a shiny rehash of what we've seen before?
To our delight, EA Sports College Football 25 surpasses mere expectations. What initially seemed like a potential Madden clone quickly reveals itself as a game in a league of its own. From the electrifying buzz of packed stadiums to the distinct traditions of every university, this game masterfully captures the essence of college football. The atmosphere isn't just vibrant - it's a sensory overload, with roaring crowds and immersive school-specific rituals that transport you straight to game day.
The game's visual and gameplay enhancements also impress. You can almost feel the intensity as players collide, sweat glistening in high-definition detail, and witness AI that reacts with an authenticity that Madden’s offerings have yet to match. EA Sports College Football 25 isn't just about reliving old glories - it's about experiencing college football in a whole new light.
Enhanced gameplay and enduring issues
EA Sports College Football 25 sets a new benchmark in gameplay with its refined movement system. Running backs now navigate through gaps with fluidity, their interactions with guards feeling more realistic as they move seamlessly through holes rather than awkwardly stumbling. Spin moves, too, exhibit greater weight and natural fluidity, adding a new dimension to the running game.
On defense, tackling has received a much-needed overhaul. The impact of hits now varies based on the player’s position and physical attributes. For instance, a collision with a heavy defensive end feels notably more forceful than one with a speedy cornerback, accurately reflecting the real-life dynamics of football.
The passing game has seen significant improvements, largely thanks to smarter AI and the freeform placement pacing introduced in Madden 24. This results in tighter window receptions and a more realistic challenge for quarterbacks. Unlike previous iterations, corners can no longer be user-controlled to perform unrealistic jumps for interceptions. Each interception now requires solid coverage, strategic playcalling, and precise execution, making every pick a testament to genuine skill.
Despite its advancements, EA Sports College Football 25 stumbles in certain areas, particularly in the single-player career mode, Road to Glory. Unlike the engaging high-school recruitment process of NCAA Football 14, the current mode simplifies the experience by allowing players to select their position and star rating from the start. This streamlined approach diminishes the depth of character development and progression.
The mode’s repetitive minigames and lack of meaningful storytelling further detract from the immersion. Players can easily exploit the system by focusing solely on Academics for early season upgrades while ignoring less impactful aspects like Brand. This approach undermines the mode’s potential for a compelling and immersive career experience.
Bottom Line
EA Sports College Football 25 delivers a strong on-field experience that captures the thrill and pageantry of college football with impressive gameplay and realistic presentation. For die-hard fans of the sport and those familiar with EA’s football games, it’s a gratifying return to a beloved franchise with fresh and exciting elements.
However, the game falls short in certain areas, particularly with its single-player career mode and academic simulation, which feel underdeveloped and repetitive. While the core gameplay is robust, the off-field experience leaves much to be desired, lacking the depth and immersion that could elevate it to greatness.
For players eager to dive into college football action, College Football 25 offers a compelling and enjoyable experience. Yet, it’s clear that there’s potential for further improvement. As with any evolving series, there’s hope for enhancements in future iterations. For now, it’s a solid game with a strong foundation, but one that’s still striving to reach its full potential.
